Session Notes 2

Friday, November 13, 2009

  • After distributing their equipment and ammunition, the group decides to find a gun store and load up.
  • Christina and Logan remember that one such store exists near their current location.
  • An attempt to find it gets them lost.
  • After wandering around the city, the survivors find a gas station and hope to find a map of the city inside.
  • Strange, raspy breathing from inside causes them to ditch that idea.
  • They continue to wander around mapless, and get lost.
  • Hopelessly lost.
  • Suburbia Hell lost.
  • With daylight ticking away, the investigators break open a car and steal a Road Atlas of Arkham, soon plotting a course to the road they remember it being on.
  • Surprisingly, it was right by the hospital, yet they wandered far away.
  • As the survivors navigate the post-apocalyptic streets, they begin to realize that the car's bulk limits its utility in a city where wrecked vehicles and dead bodies litter the streets.
  • The survivors ditch the vehicle and instead rely on the increased mobility of their bikes.
  • After a time of exercise, the group finally arrives at Butts and Barrels.
  • The front door is locked, and protected by security bars. Christina debates picking the lock, but the group realizes it would be dark.
  • They decide to check for a back door.
  • They find the door ajar. They attempt stealth, but Logan stumbles over a metal trash can, which clatters to the concrete, spilling its content and alerting the entities within the gun store to their presence.
  • The group decides to stay and fight for their equipment.
  • Four weak reavers rush out, their eyes afire with madness and rage. They begin to pound on the heroes.
  • Christina and Carrie fight with their guns while Logan tries to bludgeon the beasts with a pipe, but he begins to take heavy damage.
  • Despite the damage dealt to them, the madmen continue to assault the survivors, who quickly get it in their heads that this fight is not one they can win as the beasts press on.
  • The party struggles to mount their bikes and escape.
  • When they finally succeed, they find Carrie and Christina to be badly wounded and Logan, who had taken the brunt of the maniacs' assault, barely able to keep himself conscious.
  • As darkness descends, the party arrives at the hospital and immediately helps themselves to the unattended supplies.
  • Logan inadvertently discovers a walkie talkie. They fiddle with it, but gain nothing. The fighter pockets it.
  • The survivors collect supplies, and soon assemble themselves a makeshift surgery kit and a pharmacist kit.
  • They also check the changing rooms, but find the woman's room to be infested with strange creatures, which they leave alone.
  • In the men's changing room, however, they find a small duffel bag full of gym clothes, which they dump and use for extra space.
  • Suddenly, they are startled to hear a young man's voice call to them from the walkie talkie.
  • They respond eagerly, happy to know that there are others who survived.
  • They converse with the man, and discover that both are in St. Mary's Hospital. They hurry up to the second floor to meet him.
  • The trio find an unarmed young man who is dressed like a high school skater. The group introduces themselves, and he tells them his name is Stan. He reveals that he is staying with his injured mother, who was hurt in a car accident and now needs a respirator.
  • Soon afterward, the party begins to hear chittering they have grown to hate from the bathroom. They open the door, and find one of the creatures milling around under the toilet. They close the door and leave it alone, saying they'll deal with it in the morning.
  • A bizarre electrical storm suddenly rips through the sky with green lightning minutes after 8 PM. Stan tells them this has happened every night around the same time for the past few nights.

  • Christina listens outside, and hears a cacophony of eerie howls and wails unlike anything a human can or should make. The group begins to hear the same strange noises from the rest of the hospital. They check the lock on the door and bed down for the night, nursing their wounds.
  • They are soon awoken, predictably, by Stan screaming. The survivors awake in darkness, and find that the electrical generator that powered the hospital had gone out. Stan is screaming and attempting to do CPR, but the group knows that his mother is doomed. They pull him away, and struggle to keep the hysterical young man from giving away their position.
  • Eventually they subdue him and give him some drugs to help him sleep. Again, they try to get some rest, despite the noises they hear outside the door.
  • Their sleep never comes, as they soon hear a raspy moan from the ward's bathroom. The survivors arm themselves as a leathery-skinned skeleton creeps out and begins assaulting the team. Sanity Check 1/1d6
  • After Christina and Carrie evade several of its attacks, each retaliating with a pipe to its dry and dessicated body, it leaps on top of Stan's mother and begins consuming her still-cooling flesh. Sanity Check 0/1d4
  • Stan becomes even more hysterical as the entity devours his mother. Logan holds him steady while keeping the flashlight trained on the monster so that those less injured than he could fight it off.
  • The creature soon decides to go after still-living flesh, and tackles Stan, tearing his flesh from his body as he screams and pleads for the heroes to save him.
  • Carrie swings wildly, but misses, loosing her grip on the pipe. It cracks Logan in the head, knocking him unconscious, and bounces around the room, bending into an unusable shape.
  • Christina manages to crack the creature's back with her own weapon, and the two finally destroy the entity, which smolders to dust and vanishes.
  • Carrie patches up Logan as a gesture of apology as the party debates how the monster could have been in a sealed room with only a single exit. They consider that the chittering entity had somehow transformed into it, but soon the chittering entity wanders out of the opened bathroom door, seemingly oblivious to the battle that had just taken place.
  • Christina chases it back into the bathroom with the flashlight and closes the door. The creature could not have been in there the whole time, as there's nowhere for it to hide, and the survivors begin to think the creature had somehow materialized.
  • They find Stan babbling to himself in the corner, playing with one of the walkie talkies, which just gives off eerie static like a radio tuned just outside of a station.
  • Eventually Christina decides to remove the batteries so the party can rest without attracting any more monsters. Just as she does so, she hears a female voice call over the radio, "Hello?"
  • They quickly plug the batteries back in and respond.
  • The investigators discover that a whole other team of survivors is nearby, and willing to pick them up outside the hospital. The other survivors are quite adamant that being inside the hospital is a very bad idea.
  • With such a prospect ahead, Logan finds the strength to continue on, ignoring his injuries for the time being. (Talent : Second Wind x 5)
  • The survivors head out into the hospital's darkened halls. They can hear the raspy moans of monsters in the darkness, but cannot see them. They hurry through the halls towards the stairwell, but find that the floor shakes. As they rush forward, they encounter a massive, fatty creature that appears to have once been human, but swelled with mutation and pestilence into a hulking, featureless ooze. Sanity Check 1/1d6
  • Logan leaps at it, grappling its arms and keeping it occupied while Christina drags Stan down the stairs. Carrie stays behind and tries to assist Logan when they realize the monster won't let him go. The duo struggles with the creature while Stan and Christina run through the halls, encountering monsters. They ignore the threats and continue towards the front door, taking damage from a monster's wild swiping.
  • Logan finally disengages and runs down the stairs with Carrie hot on his heels. The brute clubs her with its hulking arms, sending her tumbling down the stairs into Logan. They climb to their feet and rush to catch Christina and Stan.
  • The team manages to get outside where a van awaits them. They climb in, shut the door, and drive away into the night.
  • The other survivors introduce themselves as a paramedic named Damien, a high schooler named Tiffany, a priest named Adrian, a businesswoman named Lillian, and the driver of the van and leader of the other team Brom.
  • The survivors exchange tales and information about the entities, and the others confirm that the monsters do indeed materialize out of nowhere, and that the static the walkie talkies emit hints at the entities' presence.
  • The united survivors soon arrive at the safehouse: a small apartment with a ground-floor window which the van pulls right up to, allowing a quick and easy entrance that does not require access to other rooms or halls of the building. The group is amused and relieved that every inch of the safehouse is lit by christmas lights and powered by a portable gas generator.
  • Safe within the light and under the care of other survivors much like themselves, the team drifts off to sleep.

Sunday, November 15, 2009 -> Wednesday, November 18, 2009

  • The party rests and relaxes during this time.
