Session Notes 3

Thursday, November 19, 2009

  • The group decides to pick up a GCMS to analyze the physical composition of the entities, particularly the poison in the chitterer's sting.
  • To do so, the party needs an evidence kit to properly prepare samples for analysis, and so they head to the police station, hoping to find one as well as some extra weaponry. Afterwards they decide to head to Miskatonic University to pick up a GCMS from the science labs and some other miscellaneous supplies from the campus, such as clothing and food.
  • The party takes the van, and drives around for an hour looking for a nearby police station.
  • They soon find one, eyeball it from outside, then enter cautiously. It is dark inside, so they take out their flashlights.
  • Carrie, Logan, and Christina decide to check out the northern section of the facility first, and remember to snag a fire escape map when they can.
  • In a conference room, the survivors find a folded note from another survivor named Travis.
  • The survivors discover the dead body of a police officer in the northern storage room. Officer Joseph Kline was handcuffed, severely beaten, and asphyxiated by a plastic bag.
  • Investigate Check Success! Christina notices an unusual lump in the cop's throat. An incision later, and they group finds a set of keys.
  • The party leaves the room, leaving a green chitterer to do… whatever it was doing in there.
  • After the northern section proves disturbing yet fruitless, the group tries the reception area.
  • Upon entering the central halls, the group notices a mysterious black aura clinging to the walls, ceiling, and floor of the hall. The group approaches cautiously but finds that it reaches out to them with a corrosive energy, and they decide that touching it is most likely in poor judgment. The walkie-talkie appears to react to the aura's presence.
  • They head north to find a kitchenette attached to the receptionist office. Inside is a trail of blood that leads across the floor, up the wall, and terminates abruptly near the ceiling, with no body nearby. The group decides they do not want to find out what kind of creature does this.
  • The party raids the kitchen, sifting out useful food from other mundane items such as aluminum foil, baking sheets, and steak knives. They joke that they can use the aluminum foil to craft hats that will keep Tiffany out of their heads.
  • The survivors browse the nearby offices, soon discovering radio equipment. They pack it up, skirt the aura, and take the radio equipment out to the van.
  • While inspecting a computer room, the party hears the sound of a door slam elsewhere in the facility. Thinking it might be Travis, the party responds by slamming their own door. This prompts an enraged scream, obviously from a reaver, which begins tearing through the facility towards the survivors.
  • The group readies themselves for a battle, but find that it never comes. When the screaming abomination reaches the hall, the party hears a sound like a whispered hiss, followed by the end of the screaming, then a thud. The group reassures themselves that touching the aura is a very bad idea.
  • They head south, hoping to find a way around the aura, when a black claw slashes around the corner at Carrie, who barely dodges. The group engages the skeletal being in the copy room, but another one soon rises from the aura. The group retreats to the daylight of the lobby, but the entities pursue. The creatures let out an otherworldly hiss at the light, but they do not appear to be harmed by it. Sanity Check 1/1d6
  • Battle ensues, and the creatures are soon dispatched. The party gives high fives and checks their map.
  • Moments afterwards, the creatures rise again, and the survivors again defeat them. They take time to finish off the squirming cadavers, which soon smolder and vanish.
  • The party then proceeds into the records room, which they search for anything useful. Christina accidentally dumps a chitterer out onto the floor, which skitters away like a bat out of hell, to find its death beneath Logan's boot.
  • The creature's dead body stings Logan's foot reflexively, but it luckily fails to sting him and instead gets its stinger caught in the boot's leather. Christina puts it in a box.
  • The group continues sneaking down the hall, but is startled by the sound of gunfire. They choose not to respond.
  • They find themselves in a waiting area. Inside, they discover two corpses slumped in the chairs, torn apart. Their skin is missing, and their internal organs are showing. Sanity Check 1/1d4+1
  • They hurriedly check the surrounding areas, which appear to be offices that were evacuated in a rush.
  • Across the hall, they find what appears to be a lecture hall, filled with chairs and a projector at one end. The party becomes interested in seeing what slides are on the projector.
  • Perception Check Success! As they move closer, they notice a seat with a ghostly depression in it, as if someone were sitting there. They shine the light on it, but see nothing. The depression soon lifts. Moments later, the door to the hall opens, then lazily pulls itself shut.
  • The survivors hurriedly leave, turning the corner to the hall and finding that nearly the entire central hall is filled with the aura. Referencing the map, they figure out that they can access many of the blocked rooms via other rooms.
  • They begin their exploration with the only available door, which leads to the women's bathroom.
  • A brief search reveals little of interest except women's clothing and shower stalls.
  • Northward, they discover a fitness center, with an elliptical bike that still moves, as if it was just recently used. The group wonders if the place is haunted.
  • Northward again they find the male locker room and showers, but find their exploration ends with the black aura creeping around the edges of the bathroom door like black frost.
  • They attempt to retreat to the sunlight while they plan their next move, but discover that the door has been blocked from the inside by a Fire Axe placed in the door handles. Logan takes it cheerfully.
  • When the door is opened, the aura hisses and sizzles, retreating from the sunlight.
  • The party wonders if they can somehow use this to clear the way to the other doors.
  • The group heads around the side of the building, deciding to try to enter an area that is under construction. The walkie-talkie indicates the presence of an entity.
  • They creep in, careful to stay near the door and the safety of the sunlight.
  • Suddenly, a hulking mass of flesh barrels towards them, slamming into Logan and knocking him off his feet. Sanity Check 1/1d6
  • Carrie is paralyzed with fear as she recalls her past experiences with the beast.
  • The monster pounds Logan against the ground before he has a chance to rise, crushing his torso and causing him to be paralyzed with blinding pain.
  • Christina attempts to drag him away, but the monster clobbers her against the wall. It repeats the attack before she has a chance to compose herself.
  • Wounded, she grabs Logan, narrowly dodges the monster's massive arm, and drags the cage fighter into the sunlight.
  • The beast attempts to pursue, but its unnatural flesh burns in the light and it retreats to the safety of the darkness.
  • Christina slaps Carrie out of her stupor while Logan recovers.
  • Together, the group hobbles around the back and smashes a window. They enter the vehicular analysis lab.
  • They search the storage cabinet, but find nothing useful.
  • More gunfire echoes through the halls. Again, the party decides not to respond.
  • They stick their heads into each of the doors, finding interview rooms, cells, and storage bins.
  • The walkie-talkie emits eerie static, almost painfully loud, as the party approaches the middle cell room. They stick their heads in just to confirm the room's utility before leaving, avoiding whatever entity is making the walkie talkie go nuts.
  • In a storage room cabinet, the party finds a human torso. It has been skinned and is so mangled its sex cannot be identified. The stomach moves and churns. Christina takes Carrie's knife and cuts it, causing pus to ooze and hundreds of diminutive, white, four-legged spiderlings to crawl forth from the wound. They shut the cabinet and leave.
  • In the third cell room, Carrie finds something unusual : the barrel of a gun pointing straight at her. She manages to dodge as it fires a bullet, and the party quickly begins to yell out, "Don't shoot!"
  • They discover a military man, who introduces himself as Sgt. Tyler Mansfield.
  • He tells them that he's a lone-wolf kind of guy and isn't particularly interested in staying with the other survivors. He also informs the group that the military base is infested and has already been scavenged by surviving military personnel.
  • They discuss the state of the police station and he fills in part of the map with aura.
  • Tyler and the survivors soon part ways, and the group discusses what to do next. They consider using some kind of reflective device to push back the aura, but also consider simply leaving and returning later, or just trying to perform the examinations without the kit and guns.
